T4 viewer - shadow set - read IO

The open source T4 viewer (PDview)

The open source T4 viewer was developed for the Windows 11/10 platform. The purpose was to view T4 data files spanning several days across all nodes in a VMS cluster. It can display data from a large number of data files. This is a huge improvement on the old TLviz data visualiser.

The main need was to look at data from nodes writing to shadow sets that physically span two sites for disaster tolerance. Write latency from any given node is different for local and remote storage arrays due to the distance latency. This is important as it can limit overall application performance by limiting the achievable IO write rate to shadowed storage.

The key feature was to handle changing shadow set memberships as members were droppped and reintroduced for data copy and backup purposes. The new open source T4 viewer enabled us to visualise the IO subsystem behaviour over an extended period of time.

The open source T4 viewer was developed by Paul Dolan.

Colin Butcher gave a session about the new T4 viewer for the Connect Deutschland user group at their 2021 online conference.
